North Carolina is one of six southern states that received funding from the USDA Forest Service to study how trees can be utilized to meet municipal goals for stormwater management, and Apex was selected to be one of the two test cases in North Carolina for the project.
The resulting study covers the role that trees play in stormwater management and shows ways in which the town can benefit from tree conservation and replanting. It also evaluated ways for the town to improve forest management as the town develops.
The results of the Trees & Stormwater project were presented to Town Council in August 2018 by of the Green Infrastructure Center, Inc.
Town staff continues to evaluate the recommendations provided by the consultant to determine which ones they recommend implementing, and on what timeline.
