Virtual Programs for Seniors (55+)

We are excited to introduce... online programs! Due to COVID-19 and the closing of many Town facilities, including most of the amenities that allow us to conduct indoor and outdoor activities, the Town has cancelled many organized programs.  Therefore, to help fill in the gap while we transition back to running in-person activities, we are introducing several virtual programs for your enjoyment!

Registration is open for both Apex residents and non-residents. These classes will be available for online registration only at www.apexnc.org/peakconnect.  After registration, a link will be sent to your email to join the class. These programs will be run through Zoom. It is our hope that one of these programs will meet your needs while we’re waiting to re-open at full capacity.  

Senior 55+ programs are currently online available virtually. We do not have a senior program guide for September-December. With the uncertainty surrounding us right now, we felt there would be too much change to be worth printing a guide. Instead you can check this page regularly for updates on senior programming for the rest of 2020. Activity descriptions for the virtual programs offered are listed in the tabs below.

  • Advanced Yoga: 6 months to a year of experience required, unless approved by instructor. You must be able to easily get up and down off of the floor, perform poses on your knees and not have any medical conditions or precautions to performing poses above your head or inverted poses. Modifications will be made when needed with the use of props, which you are expected to bring to class.
  • Intermediate Yoga: 6 months of yoga experience required, unless approved by instructor. You must be able to easily get up and down off of the floor and perform poses on your knees.
  • Beginner Yoga: Yoga is a natural stress reliever and a great way to maintain your health! Simple stretching, yoga postures, breathing and relaxation techniques will be taught. Props such as chairs, blankets, blocks and straps may be used for modifications. Please refrain from eating a heavy meal at least one hour before class. A portion of the class will be chair(seated) yoga, followed by standing poses with the chair as a prop and finishing with floor and stretching and relaxation. If you are unable to get down on the floor, you may choose to sit in a chair.
  • Zumba Gold: Zumba is a feel-happy workout that combines a motivating fusion of Latin and international music with unique moves and dynamic combinations that allow participants to dance away their worries.  It is based on the principle that a workout should be "Fun and Easy to Do" allowing participants to stick to the program and achieve long-term health benefits in both body and mind.   A mixture of body-sculpting movements with easy-to-follow dance steps, the routines utilize the principles of aerobic interval and resistance training.  A combination of fast and slow rhythms tone and sculpt the body, maximizing caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. 
  • Steel Strong: Take that next step to building strong muscles and staying fit. Forty five minutes of strength training two-to-three times per week can result in huge benefits such as fat loss, increased bone density, improvements in cholesterol and increased muscle tone. Learn the proper techniques of strength training using the abdominals, upper and lower body muscles. Must provide your own hand weights and small exercise ball.
  • Golden Fit Drummers: This is a full body interval cardio jam session, combining light resistance with drumming. Drum off pounds, aggression and stress! This is a one-of-a kind workout for ALL levels. Strengthen and  sculpt muscles, with a combination of cardio moves, strength training and drumming. This combo works the entire body, raises the heart rate to a fat-burning zone and forces each move to be as precise as a basic beat.
  • Line Dancing Beginner: Learn to line dance in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. This class is designed for those new to line dancing. We will cover the terminology of basic steps. Sessions will begin with 1-wall (no turning) dances slowly progressing to simple 4-wall dances. This form of dance requires no partner and is a great way to exercise your mind and body!
  • Line Dancing Beginner 1: For those with some line dance experience or have successfully completed the Beginner Line Dance Class.  You should know basic line dance steps and terminology.
  • Line Dancing Beginner 2: Designed for the dancer who has prior experience and has successfully completed the Beginner 1 Line Dancing Class. You are expected to know line dance terminology and patterns.
